About

Welcome to Dirl Weaver Designs!

My name is Rachel "Dirl" Weaver.

Dirl is a nickname given to me by my husband of 33 years, Kenny Weaver, Jr.

I am mom to our two rescue pups

Gracie & Chewy Weaver.

I have always had a passion for seeking the natural beauty in things and enjoy working with my hands to create custom pieces of wearable art. I've worked with many mediums and materials. If it inspires me it will become a work of art.

I'm glad we have found each other and am grateful for your interest in my jewelry making journey!

Caring for your 925 Sterling Silver Jewelry

Tarnish

Your silver will tarnish for a variety of reasons and it is unavoidable. Tarnish occurs as a result of silver reacting

with Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) and Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

in the air. In some areas depending on where you live, your silver will tarnish much quicker because of humidity.

Avoid Exposure

The oils in your skin act as a natural polishing agent, but you should always remove your jewelry when doing house hold chores or cleaning tasks. Direct sunlight should also be avoided so remember to cover your jewelry when you take it off to sun bathe or to swim.

Exposure that should be avoided:

Hair products such as dyes and hairsprays

Swimming (chlorinated and salt water)

Perspiration during exercise

Detergents that may contain phosphates

Cosmetics, body lotions, perfumes, sunscreens, oils

Foods including onion, egg yolk, mustard, salt, vinegar, salad dressings and olives

Paint thinners and, nail polish remover (containing acetone), bleach, ammonia and alcohol

All of the above may cause damage to your silver.

Polishing

For general maintenance use a gentle polishing cloth to buff and rub away mild tarnish. Polishing cloths work well and they can be used over and over. Polishing regularly keeps the tarnish from building where it will be harder to remove later. Do not use tissue or paper towels to polish your silver.  They contain fibers and can scratch your jewelry.  A microfiber or silver polishing cloth will keep your jewelry from being scratched.

Cleaning

There are several commercial cleaners for silver on the market. These cleaners can be harsh and could cause damage to your jewelry. Please do not use any commercial cleaner on your silver jewelry if it has turquoise, opal, pearl, garnet or any other precisions stones.  It may damage the finish of the stones.

Below is a homemade environmentally friendly and cost effective cleaning solution you can use to clean your jewelry.

Soap and water:

  • Warm water and a mild, ammonia- and phosphate-free dishwashing soap
  • Dip cloth in and gently wipe your jewelry

Storing Your Silver

Store silver in an area free from dust and dirt.

Add silica gel to the cabinet or drawer to keep humidity levels low.

Keep silver stored on wood that has been treated with polyurethane or lacquer. This will also keep tarnish down.

Limit the amount of exposure to air by storing silver pieces in bags pretreated with anti-tarnish material. You can also wrap silver in plastic kitchen wrap.

Put a piece of white chalk in your storage drawer or area to prevent tarnish.

Polish silver thoroughly with a polishing cloth before storage.
